Overview
Thailand's SMART Visa program has been revised to focus on eligible technology-based startup entrepreneurs. The active categories promoted by the BOI are SMART S for qualifying entrepreneurs and SMART O for eligible family members. Older website lists describing SMART T, I and E as currently open routes for new applicants should not be reused.
Who can apply
- SMART S two-year applicants must have an established startup in Thailand certified for a targeted industry by the relevant government agency.
- The applicant must be a company director or own at least 25% of its registered capital.
- SMART O may be available to eligible family members subject to the program's rules.
Financial requirements
- SMART S two-year applicants need at least THB 600,000 in a qualifying bank account maintained for at least three months.
- For accompanying spouses and children, published criteria describe an additional THB 180,000 per person held for at least three months.
- Qualifying health-insurance coverage for the applicant and dependents is required.
Visa validity and permission to stay
The eligible SMART S route may provide permission to stay for up to two years, subject to endorsement and continued compliance. SMART Visa holders have particular work-permit arrangements tied to their approved activity; this should not be presented as unrestricted permission to work in any business.
Typical supporting documents
- Passport, photograph and personal information.
- Company registration and documentation showing the qualifying technology-based business.
- Relevant government endorsement or certification of the startup.
- Evidence of directorship or shareholding.
- Bank statements, health-insurance evidence and dependent relationship records where applicable.
Application process
Confirm SMART S eligibility and obtain the relevant BOI and government-agency qualification endorsements before completing the visa issuance procedure. The applicant's company and activity must remain consistent with the approved basis.
